Are stable doors secure?
As a stable door is split into two parts, you might wonder if it is less secure than ordinary doors. However, for a quality stable door this is rarely the case. Most stable doors lock together when you close them, meaning they function just like a normal door and are just as secure as one, provided you have a good locking system.
To further improve security, we can fit separate locks for individual door panels, and install a secondary bolt that secures both parts together. You can speak to us today to find out more about how we make our stable doors secure.
Can you get PVCu stable doors?
Certainly. PVCu stable doors are secure, cost-effective and energy efficient, and as we manufacture them in our own specialist factory we can make them to your bespoke requirements. Many feel that stable doors should be wooden, with a rustic feel. That’s all well and good, but we think our wood-finish PVCu doors look great, retain a traditional style and have some advantages when it comes to energy-efficiency and durability. PVCu might be associated with classic PVCu panel doors, but it isn’t confined to this use.

How does a stable door work?
A stable door is made from two halves, with top and bottom sections that can open or close independently. Originally designed for stables, the half-open door would ventilate and light a horse’s enclosure while restricting its movement. Household stable doors operate similarly, allowing you to light and ventilate your home without having to leave your door completely open.
Any questions? When one of our installation teams fit a stable door into your home, they’ll always make sure you understand exactly how it works.
Why have a stable door?
You might think stable doors are for farmhouses (or actual stables!), but their practicality and rustic charm means they can be pleasant and useful back doors for ordinary homes all over the UK.
Stable doors offer increased ventilation and light, but don’t mean you have to worry about keeping your children or pets safe inside — and, of course, they look really, really good! If you are thinking about installing a stable door but have some specific questions about your property’s suitability, call us or visit our Exeter showroom to talk to an expert.
Do stable doors open in or out?
You have complete freedom to choose whether you want your stable doors to open inwards or outwards. We make our products to order in our state-of-the-art factory, so it’s really a question of personal preference.
If by opening your stable door outwards you would block or strike a window, you might prefer to have an inwards-opening door — just make sure that there is space for you to fasten the top section back without it getting in the way! It all depends on the space you have and what would work best for you and your home.
Can you get stable doors with windows?
At AGS, we can tailor-make stable doors with glazed panels to suit your preferences. One common design is to have glass panels in the top half of the door, which provide natural light in your home even when the door is closed. Fortunately, installing windows in your stable door doesn’t make the door any less secure — we use toughened glass in all our outer doors for enhanced security. If you’ve a particular style of door design you’re interested in, contact us today to discuss the possibilities.
