Are French doors always double?
Part of the iconic appeal of French doors is that they come in pairs, but this all depends on how you imagine them. Yes, they’re two doors — but they’re part of the same frame rather than two separate doors in two separate frames. When you open them completely they provide wide-open, unobstructed access to your garden.
You can choose to open just one segment, or open both to create flow between your inside and outside spaces. Either way, yes! All of our French doors come in pairs.
Why is it called a French door?
French doors originated in France, where developments in glass-pane manufacturing allowed Renaissance designers to innovate a door design that was easy on the eye and practical in an age before electrical lighting. They were installed extensively in France, and before long their practical, elegant style caught on in other parts of the world.
We provide French doors in a variety of modern and traditional styles, so you can find a make that matches your vision for your home perfectly.
What is the difference between patio doors and French doors?
French doors consist of one frame with two doors inside that open (either inwards or outwards) to your garden. Patio doors, on the other hand, are more often sliding doors and can consist of one or two sliding panels, depending on the space you have available. Both are great choices for doors opening to an outdoor area. French doors give you a larger space to walk through and increased ventilation, but you need to make sure the doors won’t take up too much space in your home. Patio doors stay within the frame, so are good for homes with limited space.
Do I need planning permission for French doors?
You don’t need to seek planning permission for French doors if you’re replacing doors in the same size opening or even if you’re making a larger opening for your French doors — but please note that this is only true when the doors are both at the rear of the property and not facing a road.
If you live in a listed building or a protected area there will probably be additional restrictions in place. At AGS, we’re certified with CERTASS, meaning we have the expertise to comb through the regulations and offer a range of suitable solutions for your property.
Do French doors swing in or out?
It’s all down to personal preference; French doors can either open inwards or outwards. Some people prefer inwards-opening if otherwise the doors would block a path outside or if there are shrubs in the way of them swinging outwards, but they do take up extra space inside. Outward-opening doors give you more space inside your home, and with our modern tension hinges, you don’t need to worry about them getting caught in the wind and slamming. It all depends on the space you have and which you would prefer; contact us today to get some advice on which would be better for you and your home.
Do French doors increase home value?
In contrast with a standard door leading out to your garden, well-installed and maintained French doors can certainly add value to your home. The right set of doors increases the amount of light your home receives and gives the adjacent room an airy, sunlit feel, as well as giving the impression of real “flow” between your garden and home.
To reiterate — to really add value with a set of French doors, they should be high quality and durable. At AGS we make our products ourselves and only use the highest quality materials, producing beautiful doors that don’t skimp on appearance, energy-efficiency or security.
