What is a casement window?
Casement windows are able to swing open because they are attached to a frame by hinges at the side. Although side hinges are the most common way casement windows attach, they can also be top hung, where the hinges are at the top. These are known as ‘awning casement windows’ and are very effective at blocking out the rain. For your basement, consider installing bottom-hung windows, which give better ventilation for this area of the house.
You can choose between single windows or paired windows fitted within one frame.
Are casement windows more energy efficient?
When closed, a casement window’s sash presses against the frame. This creates an airtight seal, stopping cold air from getting in the house and ensuring warmth is trapped inside.
This helps to insulate your house, so you should notice you stay warm without having to put the radiator on.
You can even get double or triple glazed windows for maximum energy efficiency. This extra insulation will not only help you save money on bills, it might also buffer noise pollution from nearby bars and traffic.
What is the difference between a casement window and a picture window?
While you can swing your casement windows in or out to let air circulate around the home, picture windows are fixed and can’t be opened. Although they give you a beautiful panoramic view of your outside space, if you’d like your windows to open they’re not the ones for you.
Casement windows are typically small and consist of multiple sashes or panes. Picture windows have very few window panes for an unobstructed view.
Are casement windows safe?
Casement windows have special hook-shaped locks that insert directly into the frame. This engineering and their multi-locking system make it very difficult for people to break in through your windows.
At AGS, our casement windows are also covered by the Official Police Security Initiative, Secured By Design. We hope this means that you can enjoy your casement windows reassured that you and your loved ones are safe in your home.
How much do casement windows cost?
There is no set price for casement windows. Cost depends on the material used and how much work needs to be done to fit the window.
Less labour equals a lower cost, so if you’re simply replacing one old casement window this will be cheaper than installing a brand new set of casement windows.
If you’re looking for the cheapest material, PVCu is your best option. Different finishes such as timber or aluminium might cost you more.

Are casement windows worth it?
Casement windows can really freshen up a room, letting more light and air inside than your standard windows.
As they are also brilliant insulators, you might see the cost of your windows offset by the money you save on your energy bills.
Those with a disability or limited mobility might also appreciate the crank mechanism which allows you to open and close the window. It’s very easy to use, even with one hand.
