Do you need foundations for a lean to conservatory?
Lean-to conservatories require foundations. Although they use one of your property’s structural walls, foundations are still necessary if your conservatory is going to be a long-lasting and stable construction.
The depth of your foundations will depend on the type of soil your conservatory will be installed on. We’ll send a surveyor to your home before all the designs are finalised. They’ll test the soil so we know what groundwork and footings will be necessary to create a reliable, sturdy base for your conservatory.
What is a lean-to conservatory?
At AGS, a lean-to conservatory is one of the simplest conservatory designs we have on offer.
Lean-to conservatories consist of three glass walls coming out from one of the main walls of your property. They are generally smaller than a traditional conservatory and you might hear them being referred to as ‘sun rooms’.
While you can choose to have a glass roof on your lean-to conservatory (the obvious option for people looking to maximise on light), a tiled roof option is available — perfect for those who are a bit more worried about insulation.
People often get conservatories as an alternative to getting an extension. However, if you don’t even have space for most standard conservatory designs, then a smaller lean-to conservatory is another great option.
What's the difference between a lean-to and a conservatory?
Standard and lean-to conservatories have many similarities. They both let lots of light and warmth into your property and increase the amount of living space available to you and your family.
However, they do differ in some respects. Standard conservatories are generally much larger than lean-to options and can have more ornate detailing and pitched roofs, like our Victorian or Edwardian conservatories.
A gently sloping or flat roof characterises a lean-to conservatory. They tend to take up less space and don’t extend very far from your home’s exterior wall.

Why choose a lean-to conservatory?
If your property has restricted outdoor space, then a lean-to conservatory might be the way to go.
They don’t take up the whole garden and usually extend just a small amount away from your home. This means they can bring lots of natural light and warmth into your property without making you sacrifice valuable outdoor space.
Some homes, such as bungalows, have restricted space under the eaves, which makes installing a standard conservatory a little more difficult. As a lean-to conservatory can vary the pitch of its roof depending on the type of property you have — a shallow one for a low bungalow roof, or a steeper pitch for a terraced house — this might be the perfect conservatory for your property.
