What is the difference between French windows and French doors?
Both French windows and French doors have the same design — one that involves two glass panels that open from the middle with no pillar between them. This means that whether you have French windows or doors, when they’re open you have an unobstructed view of the outside.
While French doors are frequently used as patio doors that open out into the garden, French windows are smaller so can be used on any floor.
Why are French windows called French windows?
This story goes all the way back to the Renaissance during the 17th century. As new ideas in art and architecture were developing — with light as a central theme, naturally, people wanted to get more light into their homes. They started to use more glass in their windows, and this trend spread across Europe.
When the French caught onto this, they started making large windows that could be used in the home as either garden or balcony doors. As this proved to be an effective way to brighten the home, the design quickly became popularised across Western Europe.
Are French windows secure?
As with other types of window, what makes French windows secure is the quality of the materials used to make them. If you choose the right type of glazing and lock mechanism, French windows can be as secure as any other window type.
You can rely on our services. All of our products are approved by the Police-led Secured by Design initiative, which works to protect UK homes from theft.
We’re proud to use three-point locking systems, high security hinges, locking shoot-bolts, and thermally toughened glass on all our double glazing. This shouldn’t be surprising — we take security seriously. Our expert installers won’t leave your home until your windows are completely secure.
Do French windows swing in or out?
Whether you want your new French windows to swing in or out is up to you — each opening has its pros and cons.
Inward-opening windows are easier to clean from the inside, but if you have large, heavy curtains they can get in the way.
With outward opening windows, you don’t need to think about how they’ll impact your indoor space. Plus, they collect less rain and debris in the frames than inward ones. Also, as we provide modern anti-slam windows, it’s unlikely they’ll get caught by sudden bursts of winds.
There is no ‘right’ decision with this — it’s up to you and what you think will work best in your house.
What are the advantages of French windows?
Homeowners love French windows because they’re able to provide a wide, unobstructed view to the outside world — whether this is the swaying trees in your garden or bustling commuters on the street.
Whatever your view, if you enjoy looking out of the window and gazing at the world around you, French windows are an excellent choice. Nobody likes pillars or panels in the way of their view, so why would you want them in your windows? French windows get around this common window feature, giving you the clearest view.
French windows can also be useful if you want to ventilate your home effectively, as the doors can be used to angle a breeze straight into your home. Whether you want better views, more light, or efficient ventilation, French windows could be the best option for you.

Can French windows be used as a fire escape?
According to the UK government-authorised scheme FENSA, on upper floors, each room must be fitted with fire escape windows as long as they aren’t over 4.5 metres above ground level.
Fire escape windows must be able to open to create an unobstructed space of 0.3 metres squared. As French windows can open this wide and are unobstructed so long as they are the right size, they can be considered a FENSA-approved fire escape window.
