Are uPVC sash windows any good?

uPVC is known for its durability and versatility, but not so much for its aesthetic charm. While uPVC didn’t use to be the most attractive material, it can now replicate a traditional looking sash window.

uPVC is a lot cheaper than wooden frames, so people have opted for this durable plastic as a cost-effective window material for a while now. It’s also a high-quality material, so functionality isn’t compromised. uPVC windows now come in many different designs, so you still have lots of choice when it comes to the look of your windows.

A well-made uPVC sash window can look identical to a classic freshly-painted wooden one and is just as high quality. The difference lies in the cost and the required maintenance. uPVC is cheaper and easier to look after — all they need is a quick wipe now and again.

Can sash windows be double glazed?

You can maximise the energy efficiency of your home by upgrading your uPVC sash windows to have double or triple glazing.

These layers are effective at stopping heat from escaping your home and cold air from getting in. In turn, this means that less energy is needed to heat up your home and you get to save on energy costs. All our uPVC sash windows come double glazed as standard.

uPVC sash windows are one of the cheapest ways of installing double glazing in your home. As a cost-effective, energy-efficient, and aesthetically pleasing window option, what’s not to love?

How do you measure a sash window?

You can measure a sash window in a few different ways:

Sash window width – you should measure from one side of the window to the other within the box frame. Exclude the width of the box that the window sits in

Sash window height – you should measure inside the box frame to get a measurement of the windows themselves. Include both sashes when you measure from the top of the window to the bottom

Box frame height – this is a measurement from the top of your window frame down to the windowsill

Box frame width – measure from one side of the window to the other, including the entire window frame

How does a window sash work?

A sash window consists of two or more panels. At least one panel can move vertically up or down, allowing you to open and close your window. When a sash window slides open, the panel of glass stays in the same place and does not slide back down into the casing. This is because the window uses a pulley system where one window is at one end of the cord, and a counterweight is at the other. This way, your window doesn’t slam shut as soon as you let go of the sash.

When both the top and bottom panels can move, your sash windows are ‘double hung’. You can also get sash windows that are ‘single hung’, meaning just one panel moves. If you’d like to be able to open your windows as much as possible, double-hung sash windows might be for you.

Are uPVC or Aluminum windows better?

If you’re looking for maximum insulation within your home, uPVC is the best option. This is a naturally insulative material that’s also long-lasting. It also needs minimal upkeep – just wipe away any dust, dirt, or marks that you see on your uPVC sash window.

Aluminium is a very robust material, but it’s more expensive than uPVC. Given the benefits of uPVC, the added price of aluminium sash windows might not be worth it for you. However, this all depends on what you want from your windows.

As aluminium sash windows can be made from smaller window frames and sashes to create a larger glass surface area, they are great if you want to let lots of light into your home or see the view from your window with thinner frames obscuring the view.

Which part of the window is the sash?

The sash is the moveable part of a window that sits in the frame and holds the glass. With a double-hung window, you’ll have two sashes that can move up and down. With a single-hung window, only one sash will move.

It’s important that you properly install and maintain your window sash, otherwise bits of dirt and debris can stop it functioning properly. This can ruin its appearance, cause leaks, and let draughts in that will damage your window frame and reduce the insulative properties of your sash window.
