A stylish and luxurious design to complement any property, an orangery harks back to an era of grace and glamour. Historically, orangeries were a practical garden building for the cultivation of exotic shrubs and trees and could only be afforded by the wealthiest of families.
Today an orangery is a sophisticated home extension and an enjoyable living space, available for almost every budget. An orangery is similar to a conservatory, but it has a more solid structure; dwarf walls run around the edge of the building, and the edges of the roof are also solid. The rest of the roof is still glass, so the room will be flooded with light and warmed by the sun.
An orangery is a great way to add value and space to your home; less expensive than a traditional extension, but more hardwearing than a conservatory, an orangery will be an integral part of your home for years to come.
Our patented designs enable us to provide you with your dream orangery. Whatever style you go for, you will be creating a stunning and practical living area; choose from our variety of features, styles and colours to make it as individual as you are.

What is an orangery?
An orangery is a room with a similar look and feel to a conservatory but a little more brickwork. They usually have a low wall and pillars running around the perimeter of the construction, with a solid roof comprising either a lantern or glass pods built into the canopy. The rest of the walls are still made from glass. Orangeries were originally used as a way for northern Europeans to grow orange, lemon and lime trees, eventually becoming glamorous status symbols among the wealthy and aristocratic. Nowadays orangeries are lighter on the citrus trees, being used instead to fill a section of a modern home with wholesome light and warmth
What is the difference between an orangery and a conservatory?
Usually, a conservatory is made almost completely of glass, receiving sunlight through its glass ceiling, doors and windows. An orangery is more solid, made of brick and stone, and usually lets in slightly less light. As a result, orangeries don’t get as blazing hot as conservatories in the summer and tend to be easier to heat in winter, making them more of a versatile space throughout the year. An orangery usually feels and functions more like a solid home extension than a conservatory, while a conservatory provides a pleasant, airy zone between outside and in. We encourage you to take your time choosing between the two!
Is an orangery warmer than a conservatory?
An orangery has more of a solid build and uses less glass, and is therefore usually warmer than a conservatory in the colder months of the year. This obviously depends on the type and quality of glass and materials used — a conservatory made with thick, double-glazed A+ rated glass should hold more heat than an orangery with thick walls and a good solid roof but draughty single-glazed windows. Thankfully, at AGS we fit all our extensions with high-performance double glazing, providing a liveable space all year round.
Is an orangery cheaper than an extension?
An orangery is usually more expensive than a same-sized conservatory, but cheaper than a full-blown extension. An orangery provides a bright, attractive space and can serve as a home’s centrepiece in much the same way as a well-fitted extension. Interested? Contact us today for a free, no obligation quote.
