Double Glazing

  • Double glazing is especially designed to put a halt to excessive heat loss, helping you save money on your household bills. It also is a great way to reduce outside noise, which is ideal if you live near a busy road or are just looking for some peace and quiet.

Double glazing works by having two separate panes of glass in one window frame with a gap between them. We fill this gap with a gas called argon, which is denser than air – this works as an insulator, and the cold temperature of the outside window pane is not transferred to the inner pane. This also significantly reduces condensation on the inside of your windows, an issue often seen with single glazing.

All our double glazed windows come with excellent energy saving ratings, and we also offer Super Energy Efficient glazing and triple glazing to help shrink your energy bills even further. Installing double glazing in your home is a great investment, saving you money on heating and also adding value to your home.

Double glazing also adds an extra level of security to your home, as the thicker frames and double glass panels are harder to break. We use high security hinges and thermally toughened glass to make sure you feel safe in your home.

Is it worth replacing double glazing?

Double glazing usually has a healthy lifespan of 20 – 30 years. As windows age, they tend to become less efficient. If you’ve noticed that your windows don’t seem to be holding heat in like they once were, it might be worth replacing them.

If your double glazing is under 10 years old, however, it might be more cost-effective to just have them repaired — at AGS, we offer guaranteed repair for your windows if they aren’t performing to the highest standard. On the other hand, if you need to replace your windows completely and want the best energy rating available, you could ask one of our advisors about triple glazing.

What is the best gap for double glazing?

Double glazing insulates against noise and heat because of the built-in , gas-filled gap between the panes of glass. At AGS we fill the gap with argon — an inert, heavy noble gas.

A 28mm thick unit with a 20mm gap between the two panes of glass is our tried-and-tested design for most of our glazing, and we offer this as standard. We hope our glazing will help you save on your heating bills and help protect the environment, two things we care passionately about.

Does double glazing reduce condensation?

Yes! Condensation is caused by warm, damp air hitting a cold windowpane, causing the humidity in the air to condense on the glass. Modern double glazing is usually made from two glass panes separated by a layer of dense noble gas. We use argon.

This layer slows heat transfer between the two panes of glass. This means that the outer window pane might be freezing, but that the inner one is usually closer to the inside temperature of your home.

Without the contrast between warm air and cold window, you can wake up after a cold night and open your curtains to reveal a double-glazed window without a thick coat of condensation.

Does double glazing reduce noise?

Yes! Sound travels in vibrational waves, and travels with ease through single glazing. However, sound can’t travel as well through double glazing because of its interstitial gaseous layer — the argon-filled gap between panes of glass. This layer of gas muffles sound, giving you a far quieter home and providing a useful solution to ambient noise issues in the home. If you live in an extremely loud area and you’re craving some peace and quiet, then contact us about our Stadip Silence laminate, which can drastically cut out noise pollution.

What is double glazing?

Double glazing is single glazing, doubled. It has two panes of glass rather than one, separated by a gap filled with (in our windows) argon, a heavy, unreactive gas. Argon gas is denser than air, making it harder for soundwaves or heat to travel between the panes, giving you vastly improved thermal and sound insulation.

Double glazing almost always makes a world of difference to the energy efficiency of homes, meaning lower energy bills throughout the year and a reduced household carbon footprint.

How long does double glazing last?

The standard lifespan of double glazing depends on its quality and care, but is typically around 20 – 30 years. To ensure your windows last as long as possible, you’ll want to check that they’re A-rated for energy efficiency, that they’re expertly installed and that you have a high-quality window frame to reduce draughts.

If you can see increased levels of condensation forming on the inside or in between your window panes, or if the inner pane of your windows feel very cold to the touch, your double glazing might not be working to its full potential.
